A major rework of the basic MiG-21 airframe, the J-8 II is not yet in service for reasons that are not entirely clear. It was originally intended to make extensive use of US avionics and radars, but the cooling relations between China and the US following the Communist crackdown in Beijing may have put the program on indefinite hold.
